Congenital Heart Defects Awareness | Together for Little Hearts

Last week, a dedicated team from Lady Pohamba Private Hospital proudly took part in the congenital cardiac surgery campaign at Windhoek Central Hospital, in support of Congenital Heart Defects Awareness Month.

Representing our hospital were Katrina Goagoses (Enrolled Nurse, PICU), Hansberth Sifire (Registered Nurse & Clinical Facilitator for the Specialised Unit), Ndilipomwene Fillemon (Enrolled Nurse, NICU), and Reinholdt Elizabeth (Enrolled Nurse, NICU). The campaign provided invaluable hands-on exposure to congenital heart surgery and post-operative care, strengthening clinical skills and deepening understanding for nurses caring for our smallest patients.

February is observed as Congenital Heart Defects Awareness Month, with focused activities from 7–14 February. Congenital heart disease remains the most common congenital condition, and building strong capacity and expertise in its management is essential to improving outcomes for children and their families.

What made this initiative especially meaningful was the incredible dedication of the congenital heart surgeon, cardiac anaesthetist, and perfusionist; their commitment and teamwork truly made us proud. They drove this programme forward with limited resources and a small team, yet achieved life-changing impact through skill, passion, and perseverance.

We are deeply grateful to Windhoek Central Hospital, the Healing Little Hearts Global FoundationMinistry of Health and Social Services-Namibia, and the Namibia Childrens Heart Trust. Together, all partners made this campaign possible, bringing hope, healing, and brighter futures to ten children and their families.

Moments like these remind us of the power of collaboration and compassion, working together for every little heart.
